The Best Day Trips from Tbilisi (Including Gori, Mtskheta & More!)
Georgia is one of the most captivating countries I’ve ever visited. With its unmatched hospitality, delicious cuisine, and breathtaking landscapes, it offers something truly unique. Many of these experiences were enriched by the fantastic day trips I took from Tbilisi, the charming capital.
My first adventure in Georgia occurred in 2017, just before the world started recognizing its allure. I spent approximately fifteen days traversing the country, with Tbilisi as my base. Lacking detailed plans, I relied on conversations with locals and fellow travelers, uncovering a treasure trove of recommendations. This allowed me to discover numerous day trips from Tbilisi, each leaving a lasting impression.
Although I adored Tbilisi (and even penned an entire guide dedicated to it), I firmly believe that venturing beyond the city is essential to grasp the true essence of Georgia. Here are five of my top day trip suggestions from Tbilisi, all easily manageable in just one day, so you can return for dinner (and wine!). Expect a delightful blend of churches, cave cities, and perhaps even the birthplace of jaywalking!

The Easiest Day Trip from Tbilisi – Mtskheta

Just a few kilometers from Tbilisi lies Mtskheta, a vibrant city with over 2,500 years of history. This destination offers one of the simplest day trips, thanks to frequent minibuses from Tbilisi’s Didube bus station, or you can share a taxi with friends for roughly $2 USD per person.
To start, visit the stunning Jvari Monastery, perched across the river from the city. A quick taxi ride here (which should cost under $5 USD for a round trip) rewards you with breathtaking views. Afterwards, head to the Svetitskhoveli Cathedral, a medieval gem believed to be the burial site of Jesus’s robe.
Consider joining a four-hour tour for an efficient exploration, including transportation back to Tbilisi.
A Day Trip From Tbilisi for History Buffs – Gori

Gori is famed as the birthplace of Joseph Stalin and has become a notable stop for tourists on day trips from Tbilisi. Upon arrival, meander along Stalin Avenue to Stalin Square, where you can visit the house where he lived as a child, now part of the Stalin Museum.
This museum, while primarily in Georgian and Russian, occasionally offers English-language tours conducted by guides who retain a nostalgic view of the former Soviet leader.
Gori’s history also includes the devastating 1920 earthquake that left a significant mark on the town. This event influenced local culture, leading to the unique practice of jaywalking as residents avoided walking on what they considered inferior sidewalks.
As you journey from Tbilisi to Gori, keep an eye on the proximity to the disputed border with South Ossetia. Be cautious as the border can come alarmingly close to the road.
A full-day trip can efficiently cover Mtskheta, Gori, and Uplistsikhe, offering a wealth of sights in one go.
A Day Trip from Tbilisi for Archaeology Fans – Uplistsikhe

A visit to Gori is incomplete without exploring Uplistsikhe, which translates to “Lord’s Fortress.” This ancient town, carved from stone since 1000 BC, was inhabited until the Mongol invasion in the 1300s.
The site features well-marked paths in English, showcasing various stone-carved structures like temples, gates, and a grand basilica at the summit. Your ticket includes access to the on-site museum, which displays fascinating artifacts.
Uplistsikhe is about ten kilometers from Gori, typically accessible via taxis for around $10; alternatively, hourly marshrutkas are an option. Joining an organized day trip simplifies the experience, like the small-group tour available.
A Day Trip from Tbilisi for Hikers – to Stepantsminda and Gergeti Trinity Church

While in Stepantsminda, you’ll catch a glimpse of the Gergeti Trinity Church in the distance, promising stunning views after a three-hour hike through the mountains. The picturesque scenery and the fourteenth-century church await you!
This trip is one of the longer day excursions from Tbilisi, necessitating private transport to efficiently navigate the Georgian Military Highway. Options include renting a car, hiring a driver, or joining an organized day trip, highly rated by previous travelers.
With an organized tour, you benefit from a knowledgeable guide who can help you choose the best hiking trail suited to your ability. Tackle a steep trail, or opt for a longer route with gradual inclines—each path offers a rewarding experience.
Day Trip from Tbilisi for Families – Ananuri Fortress Complex

One of Georgia’s most enchanting spots, the Ananuri Fortress Complex sits majestically above the Aragvi River, just fifty miles north of Tbilisi. This destination is renowned for its fairy-tale charm, featuring a small castle, bell tower, and three churches dating back to the sixteenth century.
The magical ambiance attracts families, making it a memorable day trip. Scattered throughout the fortress are fantastic photo opportunities, especially if you capture shots from the road bridge nearby.
Many tours to Gergeti Trinity Church include a stop at Ananuri (like this popular day tour), or you could opt for a taxi or marshrutka from Tbilisi. If driving yourself, don’t forget to ask your driver to stop at the Zhinvali Dam for additional spectacular photos!
Other Day Trips from Tbilisi
As I plan my return to Georgia, a few day trips are on my bucket list:
- Borjomi Central Park and Vardzia – On a previous visit, I fell in love with Borjomi mineral water. This trip will lead you to the mineral springs, Khertvisi Fortress, and the Vardzia Cave Monastery. 💧
- Kakheti Wine Region – My one regret from my last visit is not diving deeper into Georgian wines! This full-day tour includes several winery stops and seven tastings to savor. 🍷
- Full-Day Trip to Armenia – After my two-week stay in Armenia, I realized many travelers might love this day trip across the border featuring monasteries and local dining experiences. 🇦🇲
