El Raval, a vibrant neighborhood in Barcelona, often carries a misunderstood reputation. Many travelers bypass it due to concerns about safety, yet this dynamic area is filled with rich cultural history, fantastic dining options, and a lively arts scene. If you’re heading to Barcelona, don’t miss out on the incredible experiences El Raval has to offer!
Is it Safe to Visit El Raval?
My first trip to Barcelona was over twenty years ago, and back then, locals warned travelers against visiting El Raval. Yet, intrigued by its vegetarian offerings, I decided to explore despite the warnings. What I discovered was a working-class neighborhood full of delicious food, a vibrant arts culture, and a rich tapestry of immigrant stories. While some perceive it as unsafe, my experiences tell a different story. I ventured through El Raval alone in the evenings, always taking the same precautions I would anywhere else in Europe: avoiding flashy attire, keeping my belongings secured, and being aware of my surroundings.
Things to Do in El Raval
There are numerous ways to explore El Raval. Whether you’re just stopping by for a couple of hours or spending a few days, this neighborhood promises a plethora of experiences. Below, I’ve organized a list of my favorite things to do from north to south, starting at Plaça de Catalunya and making your way toward the Mediterranean Sea.
MACBA
The Museum of Contemporary Art (Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona) is a must-visit. Featuring nearly 6,000 artworks from renowned artists like Picasso and Basquiat, it’s one of my favorite contemporary art museums. Admission is €12, with discounts available during off-peak hours and for online purchases.
CCCB
Located just across from MACBA, the Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona hosts temporary exhibitions spanning various art forms. During my visit, I enjoyed a thoughtful exhibition on contemporary beauty standards. Check their website for current offerings.
Jardi des Tarongers
A quiet, unassuming garden located across the plaza from MACBA and CCCB, Jardi des Tarongers is an ideal spot to enjoy a moment of peace among orange trees. It’s perfect for grabbing a coffee or simply relaxing on a bench.
Antic Hospital de la Santa Creu
This historical hospital, now home to a beautifully preserved cloister, was Barcelona’s primary medical facility from the Middle Ages until the early 1900s. Entry to the gardens is free, but be sure to reserve tickets if you want to explore the Royal Academy of Medicine.
La Boqueria Market
La Boqueria, Barcelona’s iconic market located on La Rambla, is home to over 300 stalls showcasing everything from tapas to fresh juices. Best visited in the morning, it offers an authentic taste of local life.
Palau Güell
This stunning palace designed by Antoni Gaudí captures the artist’s early vision and is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The intricate architecture and rooftop features are truly remarkable.
Botero’s Cat
Look out for the famous cat sculpture by Colombian artist Fernando Botero, a beloved symbol of El Raval, located at the Rambla del Raval, lined with palm trees and local cafés.
Sant Pau del Camp
End your exploration at the oldest church in Barcelona, Sant Pau del Camp. For just €6, you can delve into its rich history and enjoy a tranquil atmosphere. It’s usually not crowded, making it an oasis in the lively city.
