The Best Hotels in the Carcassonne Medieval Walled City
Discover the charm of Carcassonne’s historic walled city with a delightful stay that immerses you in its medieval beauty. From luxurious accommodations to family-friendly options, find the perfect hotel to enhance your visit.
Why Stay in the Medieval City in Carcassonne?
Most hotels in Carcassonne are situated in the new part of the city, whether in the bustling Bastide Saint-Louis neighborhood or the more modern areas. However, I wanted to stay within the historical walls of the renowned fortified city. Every year, approximately 2.5 million tourists flock to the medieval citadel of Carcassonne, contrasting sharply with the local resident population of just 27 during my visit in July 2026. By staying overnight within the Cité Médiévale, you can enjoy the fortress almost to yourself in the early mornings and late evenings, avoiding the crowds.
The walled city remains open overnight, allowing you to wander down to town for meals and then return to your hotel after dark. Although you could opt for a hotel in the newer part of Carcassonne and make the trek to the castle at odd hours, it’s far more tempting to savor that extra hour of sleep while staying right inside the fortress.
Hotel de la Cité
The most luxurious option in Carcassonne is the Hotel de la Cité, a five-star property housed within a former Bishop’s Palace near the Saint-Nazaire Basilica. This hotel boasts a seasonal outdoor heated swimming pool, a serene garden area, and a lavish spa.
With a variety of accommodations including traditional rooms, family rooms, and spacious suites, Hotel de la Cité is an ideal choice for anyone seeking an unforgettable stay inside the walled city.
Hotel Le Donjon
Located in a charming stone building with a peaceful interior courtyard, Hotel Le Donjon is a fantastic family-friendly option within the walled city. Its rooms range from standard doubles to large family suites that can accommodate up to four guests, all just a short stroll from the castle entrance and its ramparts.
La Demeure de la Cité by Jean Bacou
I found my perfect retreat during my stay at La Demeure de la Cité by Jean Bacou. This cozy bed and breakfast has six rooms that include a self-check-in option, daily housekeeping, and a delightful breakfast buffet each morning. My air-conditioned room offered a lovely view of the ramparts, complete with a luxurious deep soaker tub in the bathroom.
Le Logis des Remparts à l’Intérieur de la Cité Médiévale
If you’re traveling with a group and need more space, Le Logis des Remparts is an excellent vacation rental option. This three-bedroom, three-bathroom rental can comfortably accommodate up to six people, located close to the fortress’ best restaurants, cafes, shops, and attractions.
La Demeure du Chevalier d’Argent
One of the most popular vacation rentals in the Old City, La Demeure du Chevalier d’Argent is a charming studio apartment that features a sleeping area, bathroom, and kitchen, accommodating up to four guests with a double bed and a sofa bed.
Appartements Pech Mary
Another highly-rated option is Appartements Pech Mary, a historic building featuring three rental apartments in a picturesque square surrounded by cafes and cobbled streets. The apartments available include both one-bedroom and studio options.
