The 15+ Best Things to Do in Guimaraes in One Day

On my recent trip to Porto, Portugal, I spent several days exploring the surrounding areas on a series of day trips. Among the nearby cities, Guimaraes quickly became my favorite. There’s so much to do in Guimaraes that you might find yourself wishing for an overnight stay (I did!). Despite its many attractions, the historic center still exudes small-town charm, encouraging a leisurely exploration.

#1 – Vila Flor Cultural Center

The first delightful sight upon entering Guimaraes is the Vila Flor Cultural Center, situated on Avenida Dom Afonso Henriques. When I arrived, they were still closed for the day, but depending on when you visit, you might catch art exhibitions, musical performances, or other cultural events.

Vila Flor also boasts beautiful gardens that line the route towards the historic center. Some recent reviews suggest that entering the gardens is free, but I couldn’t locate the entrance (it might have been too early!). If you do, please share in the comments!

#2 – Aqui Nasceu Portugal (Portugal Was Born Here)

At the end of the main street leading to the historic center, you’ll encounter a large wall inscribed with Aqui Nasceu Portugal, meaning “Portugal Was Born Here.” Guimaraes is often deemed the birthplace of Portugal for two reasons: it’s where Afonso Henriques, the first king of Portugal, was born, and the Battle of Sao Mamede, which took place here in 1128, symbolized the country’s quest for independence.

#3 – Historic Center of Guimaraes

You’ve now entered the historic center of Guimaraes, a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001. This area, dating back to the twelfth century, showcases the stunning architecture and significant monuments of the time.

Most key buildings are equipped with informative signage in both English and Portuguese, illuminating their historical value. I snapped over 250 photos during my short stay; the beauty of the historic center is challenging to resist!

#4 – Largo da Oliveira

Largo da Oliveira feels like the heart of Guimaraes. The lovely square is surrounded by historical buildings, cozy cafés, and one of the town’s prominent churches. In its center stand two significant monuments: the Padrão do Salado Gothic archway and an olive tree, believed to date back to the 1300s.

This iconic tree was relocated from a nearby monastery, initially perishing but later rejuvenating—a miracle locals attribute to it. Be sure to look for a metal box on the church wall, which historically held a rope for ringing a bell in case of fire emergencies.

#5 – Nossa Senhora de Oliveira Church (Our Lady of the Olive Tree)

Entrance to this tenth-century church on Largo de Oliveira is just €2, which is a steal! While many come to see the glorious golden altar and large pipe organ, my favorite part was the stunning views of Largo da Oliveira from the second-floor windows.

#6 – Sweets from the Santa Clara Monastery

Strolling up Rua de Santa Maria, you’ll find several bakeries offering treats crafted by the nuns of the Santa Clara Monastery. Don’t miss trying the Torta de Guimaraes, a delectable crispy pastry filled with egg yolks, almond paste, and spaghetti squash—local ingredients blended to perfection!

#7 – Nossa Senhora do Carmo Church

A Quick visit to this charming Baroque church, dedicated to Our Lady of Mount Carmel, offers free entry. Pay special attention to the exquisite azulejo tilework adorning the exterior wall.

#8 – Church of São Miguel do Castelo

This tiny medieval church sits on the hillside between the Castle of Guimaraes and the Ducal Palace. Inside, you’ll find a sparse atmosphere, revealing the stone graves of Knights who valiantly defended Portugal.

#9 – Guimaraes Castle

No visit is complete without seeing the iconic Castle of Guimarães, perched on a hill at the town’s center. Established in the 900s, it defended the town against persistent attacks. Note that when I visited in August 2023, parts of the castle were under renovation, but you can still explore the interior courtyard.

#10 – Paço dos Duques / The Ducal Palace of Guimaraes

My visit to the Ducal Palace was a highlight—tickets only set you back €5! The palace, dating back to the early 1400s, offers a glimpse into Portugal’s history, featuring stunning tapestries and artifacts that date back generations.

#11 – Lunch in Guimaraes

After exploring the Ducal Palace, stop for lunch at a nearby eatery. Guimaraes offers a diverse range of dining options. I personally enjoyed dining at Cor de Tangerina, a cozy vegetarian spot with a charming garden terrace.

#12 – Convent of Santo Antonio dos Capuchos

Your visit to this €2 convent, which once served as both a convent and hospital, will lead you through several fascinating rooms and the stunning bell tower offering great views.

#13 – Walk Along the Guimaraes City Walls

Don’t miss the chance to stroll along what remains of the old city walls in Guimaraes. With modern additions for safety, walking along these historic fortifications is a breeze.

#14 – The Church of Our Lady of Consolation

This charming church features zig-zag gardens leading up to its entrance. It’s free to enter, offering a serene spot for reflection.

#15 – Guimaraes Teleferico (Cable Car)

For a fun adventure, consider taking the cable car (teleferico) up to Mount Penha for breathtaking panoramic views of the city. A round trip ticket costs €7.50, and the mountain harbors walking trails, chapels, and the lovely Santuario da Penha.

#16 – Zona de Couros – The Old Tannery Quarter in Guimaraes

Lastly, explore the Zona de Couros, a historical district showcasing the city’s leather industry history. The area now serves as an open-air memorial, perfect for a leisurely walk.
